The West Virginia Certification Board

for Addiction Prevention Professionals (WVCBAPP) is a voluntary board whose purpose is to certify the qualifications and competence of the persons who are engaged in professional addictions services, be it treatment or prevention.  The WVCBAPP is a member of the International Certification Reciprocity Consortium / Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (ICRC/AODA), and as such adheres to the ICRC/AODA requirements for certification of addictions counselors, prevention specialists, and clinical supervisors.Test

News and Events

  • TESTING:  The March test is scheduled for March 13, 2010.   It will be held at the WVCBAPP office, 1400 Ohio Avenue, Dunbar, WV.  If your application has been reviewed and approved for testing, you should have received your registration form in the mail.  If you would like to test in June 2010, please make sure your application is received before April 12th.
  • The WVCBAPP administers written tests according to the IC&RC schedule.  Test for 2009 will be held: March 14; June 13; September 12; December 12.  For 2010, tests will be held: March 13; June 12; September 11; December 11.  There need to be at least 7 applicants testing for the test to take place.  The location of the test is dependent upon the location of the applicants.
  • ELIMINATION OF THE CPM (Oral Exam):  In April 2007, the IC&RC Board of Directors voted to eliminate the use of the Case Presentation Method (CPM). The CPM was an oral exam and a component of the Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Counselor (AODA) and Advanced Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Counselor (AAODA) Certifications.  Effective June 2008 the AODA and AAODA written examinations will reflect updates to include the competencies that the oral exam tested.  The AODA exam will incorporate a case study vignette with thirteen questions pertaining to the case.  The AAODA exam will incorporate several scenarios.  The AODA exam will still consist of 150 questions, and the AAODA will still consist of 175 questions.  Both exams remain 3 1/2 hours long.  FOR WEST VIRGINIA: Those who currently hold a CIS and wish to upgrade to CAC or CCAC must meet all the current requirements for the CAC or CCAC and take the new written exam.
  • RECERTIFICATION:  All certifications will expire 9/30/of the year you are to recertify.  Certifications expire 9/30 but the recertification applications are to be postmarked by August 30th.  Any recertification application postmarked after August 30th will incur a $75 late fee.  Any application that is not postmarked by August 30th will be considered inactive.  The individual can regain his/her certification up to 90 days past the expiration date by completing the recertification process and paying the late fee.  If the recertification process is not completed within 90 days, the certification will be null and void and the individual will have reapply, complete all certification paperwork and take the written test in order to be certified.
